The Downtown Brantford Business Improvement Area (BIA) wishes to expand its boundary in Brantford, Ontario.
Brantford City Hall faces difficult budgetary decisions. Before it allows the BIA to expand its boundary, citizens must question its cost and benefits.
Since its inception in 1977, has the Downtown Brantford BIA increased the diversity and amount of business activity within its current boundary? Unfortunately, no on both counts.
It was around the late ’70s when the diverse business sector in downtown Brantford started to decline. Overall, that decline has continued to this day.
In addition, it duplicates work done by other departments, e.g., Economic Development, and Parks and Recreation.
It’s unfortunate, but the Downtown Brantford BIA experiment has failed. It’s an ineffective and expensive layer of bureaucracy that taxpayers can no longer afford.
