Ms., Mrs., Mr., Sir, Mam, Madam or …

Canadians are in a tizzy over what to call their guests, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

This isn’t surprising given people’s habit of calling everything that movesGUYS.  Class and decency are harder and harder to find in our so-called advanced society.  Strangers can’t bring themselves to use Ms., Mrs., Mr., Sir, Mam or Madam when they first meet.  Few people use these regularly to show respect to someone older or for one’s role.

The business world thinks such respect slows down a potential sale.  Notice bank tellers who assume they are your best friend by calling you by your given name.

Is no one teaching etiquette anymore?

Oh, and don’t even think about calling a married couple Mr. and Mrs. so and so.  You wouldn’t want to show too much respect for the institution of marriage between a man and a woman.

You can change all this by setting an example that will come back to you.

Have a nice visit you guys … er … Your Royal Highnesses.
