Ontario teachers unions: spoiled

In recent weeks we’ve again gotten a glimpse of the militancy of Ontario teachers unions; for example, the work-to-rule campaign, particularly the report card ruckus of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO).

For over a decade, Ontario’s teachers (and indeed the burgeoning public sector) have feasted on a smorgasbord of goodies.  Total compensation (wages, pensions and extra-medical coverage) has risen 47%.  Now, when they are asked to curb their appetite, they balk.

The talented and well compensated teachers of Ontario have dealt with this behaviour before not only among their colleagues, but among their students.  Why its your typical, run-of-the-mill action of a spoiled child.  As a wise parent once said:  “the more they have the more they want.”

So, Ontario teachers may want to use this opportunity to teach us about constraint.
