Please pass (on) the salt.

Last Tuesday, with the exception of the snow belt areas, regions of Ontario got a dusting of snow, if that.  Why are we now confronted with mounds of road saltPlease pass (on) the salt. Road Salt Overuse by Municipalities on roads, sidewalks and parking lots?

Maybe we citizens need to take responsibility for:

– the condition and type of tires on our vehicles and mobility devices

– the condition and type of footwear we use

– how we maneuver on slippery surfaces

so that municipalities and businesses will not feel compelled to cover every square centimeter of public space with ankle deep road salt.

A RiverSides Stewardship Alliance and Sierra Legal Defence Fund report talks about alternatives to road salt on page 31 here.
